Dupuytren’s Contracture appears frequently in men over the age of 50 and can affect one or both hands

The condition causes hardening in a layer of tissue that lies under the skin of your palm and deformation of the fingers (mainly the ring finger and the little finger). Knots of tissue form under the skin eventually creating a thick cord that can pull one or more fingers into a bent position. The affected fingers cannot be straightened completely, therefore greatly reducing mobility of the hand. Surgical restoration is complicated. Dealing with Dupuytren’s contracture is not easy and relapse is often a possibility.

The operation is carried out in a dedicated clinic, either with local nerve block anaesthesia or local anaesthesia.

Apart from general information the patient needs to know that each operation needs to be adapted to the patient’s particular condition and needs.

The patient needs to consult a Plastic Surgeon, in order to answer possible questions and determine the scheduling and details of the operation.

Additional Information:

Duration of surgical procedure: approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Time spent in hospital: A few hours to a day.

Proposed anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia.

Usual age of patient: Whenever necessary

Patients should not be overly concerned about Dupuytren’s Contracture. Nowadays there are solutions, not only for aesthetic purposes but for practical ones as well. There is a corrective operation to recover from the abnormal thickening of the fascia caused by Dupuytren’s contracture.

Plastic Surgeon, Dr Michelakis, can inform patients about the cost of treatment and recovery using surgery to deal with Dupuytren contracture, as well the possible dangers of such an aesthetic and corrective plastic surgery.
